KEY QUESTIONS
What are the effects of war on a society? How is war different from genocide? How does war make it easier for genocide to happen?
To understand how ordinary people can become involved in perpetrating genocide, and how the victims are disempowered, it’s important for us to identify the complex social dynamics that have preceded every genocide in the 20th century. This attempt to understand will help avoid superficial conclusions: the perpetrators are to blame and ‘we’ could never do what ‘they’ did.
This activity and discussion can bring students to a more complex understanding of the daily realities of war and how these unhinge both collective social norms and individual values and behaviour.
