One of the most common reactions to extreme situations like the Rwandan genocide is to view the people involved as somehow essentially different to ourselves. However, research and anecdotal evidence from this and other tragedies tells a similar story across cultures and socioeconomic levels: these are ordinary people caught up in extraordinary circumstances.
Throughout this curriculum, by exploring the details and dynamics which led to the genocide, our aim is to humanise – rather than dehumanise – the participants.

AIMS AND PURPOSE
For students to identify situations within societies that pose a threat to peace and sustainability.
To imagine such situations happening in our country, in order to diminish the gap between people who have not experienced war and those in war-affected situations. In groups of students where this gap exists, this lesson can help to promote inclusion and shared understanding.
